The Bubbleback was first produced by Rolex starting in 1933. The creation of this model is significant because it featured Rolex’s first self-winding movement. They were not officially named Bubblebacks, but gained that name due to their oversized movements and rounded, bubble-shaped casebacks. The movements were much thicker to accommodate the self-winding mechanism.
The Bubbleback was produced in a number of reference numbers through the 1960’s and were the precursor to the DateJust series. Bubblebacks remain incredibly popular, with dedicated collectors and websites.
